| 8:00-9:00 am | Session I: Lessons Learned From IrenePresenters: Bill Woodruff & Peter Krolczyk (Waterbury), Matt Daskal (Westminster Town Manager) and John Lazelle (Wilmington Wastewater)Proctor: Phil Acebo (VRWA) Location: Morey Room (upstairs, off the main lobby) Irene is fresh in our memory, and will be as the impact of this devastating natural disaster lingers in many of the impacted communities in our state. However, many of us were spared any destruction since the storm was so localized. What can we learn from our fellow Vermonters as they battled Mother Nature and then went into the recovery phase? 1 TCH for water and wastewater operators. |
| 9:30-10:30 am | Session II: FEMA And Disaster PreparednessPresenter: Frederick Costello, PE (FEMA Deputy Infrastructure Branch Director)Proctor: Phil Acebo (VRWA) Location: Theater Room (downstairs) When a disaster strikes, two of the most important infrastructure issues enabling recovery are the availability of potable drinking water and the ability to deal with the community's sanitation which both keep disease and illness at bay. When Irene struck, were communities prepared for the federal response to the disaster? What information does a system need when a disaster strikes and how do you keep this information safe? 1 TCH for water and wastewater operators. |
| 9:30-11:00 am | Session III: Regulatory RoundupPresenters: Lynn Gilleland (US EPA Region 1) and Julie Hackbarth (Compliance and Certification Manager, Agency of Natural Resources, Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division)Proctor: Shaun Fielder (VRWA) Location: Morey Room (upstairs, off the main lobby) Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection (formerly the Water Supply Division) will review current regulations and monitoring for Disinfectant By-Products (DBPs) and Lead & Copper-and future changes involving communications between the division and water systems both paper and electronic in nature. EPA Region 1 will offer the bigger federal regulatory news/updates about ongoing drinking water issues. Also, highlights of some lessons learned from 2011's various extreme weather events that were collected in interviews and workshops after the events. 1.5 TCH for water operators. |
| 1:15-2:15 pm | Session IV: Leak Detection Can Be Profitable & Should Be!Presenter: Warren Verga (360 Utility Solutions)Proctor: Phil Acebo (VRWA) Location: Theater Room (downstairs) In order to find leaks, systems must know where their pipes are located and understand that "all noises are not leaks." 80% of all leaks have been found to be from service lines, and of course the length of time they go undiscovered is money your system does not recoup. We will discuss message metering and listening, acoustic instruments, options available to systems, and look at future technology. 1 TCH for water and wastewater operators. |
| 1:15-2:15 pm | Session V: Wastewater Nitrogen Reduction OptimizationPresenter: Paul Olander (Utility Partners LLC)Proctor: Wayne Graham (VRWA) Location: Morey Room (upstairs, off the main lobby) This presentation will detail methods of nitrogen removal via low cost operational and/or low capital improvements. 1 TCH for wastewater operators. |
